The Beginner's Mind Health Retreat

A weekend of functional medicine, nutrition, and movement at Sand Bay..

Functional Medicine Costa Rica is excited to announce the 2017 Beginner’s Mind Health Retreat. This retreat will be at the beach September 8th-11th in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

This retreat includes lodging for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. There are 7 buildings on property and 4 more cabins within walking distance along the beach. Local organic food will be provided on site all weekend. We will eat together as a community for dinner on Friday, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and lunch on Sunday.

Speakers

Pat Davidson, PhD, is currently the Director of Training and Continuing Education at Peak Performance in New York City. Davidson has worked as a professor of Exercise Science at Brooklyn College and Springfield College. Coach Davidson has coached the athletes from Springfield College Team Ironsports and qualified and competed himself in two world championships at the Arnold Classic. He has competed in submission wrestling at the highest level in the North American Grappling Association and has fought professionally in Mixed Martial Arts. Pat is also an author, teacher, and phenomenal scientist. He is constantly searching for ways to train athletes more effectively, as well as how to educate other coaches on these principles.

Sachin Patel, DC, CFMP true passions are Functional Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Patel uses Functional Medicine as a platform to transform the lives of his patients in the Cincinnati and Toronto area. He also serves as an author, speaker, health educator and corporate health consultant to organizations around the world. Dr. Patel is highly recognized by both large corporations and within his community as a “rare breed”.

Dr. Patel is also a proud father, husband, environmental advocate, author and foodie!  His passion is to help people achieve greatness through health, because health is the vehicle that allows one to serve their family and their community.

Dr. Patel founded The Living Proof Institute as a platform to showcase the benefits of functional medicine combined with lifestyle interventions.  His philosophy is that “nothing can fix your body better than it can fix itself”.  He employs his expertise as a functional medicine provider and empowers his patients to make lifestyle changes to produce long term results.

Logan Schwartz, MS, CSCS, GIFT has dedicated his life to helping athletes achieve their goals through the use of Applied Functional Science.  He has positioned himself to learn from and work along side of the best coaches, personal trainers, physical therapists, and athletic trainers in the field of prevention and performance.  Recently, Logan was the Assistant Basketball Strength Coach for The University of Texas at Austin and also is a consultant for Train 4 The Game, Inc., which is one of the elite performance facilities in the nation, and for YourTrainer.

Logan’s passions include helping individuals restore and discover vitality while utilizing the principles of Applied Functional Science in which he has extensively studied through his affiliation with the Gray Institute for Functional Transformation. Additionally, Logan enjoys teaching and mentoring other professionals in the field of Human Health and Performance. He has spoken at many undergraduate and graduate level classes as well as presented at the 9th Annual Sanford Strength and Conditioning Clinic (Sioux Fall, SD) in April 2010 where he was the featured speaker.

Brenda Gregory, MS, CN, FDN earned her Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States after graduating with Bachelor of Science degrees in Pre-Medicine and Psychology from Portland State University. Before earning her master’s, she spent many years working in research, including Alzheimer’s Disease, cognitive neuroscience, and nutrition. Later, she served as Nutrition Director for Onnit, an Austin based supplement company, writing nutrition articles and assisting in product development. It was here that she realized her desire to work with clients in an individualized capacity, which prompted her to begin working at Health Plus ATX as a Functional Medicine Nutritionist. Brenda works with a variety of conditions including metabolic disorders, autoimmunity, hormonal imbalances, athletes, and those just looking to obtain optimal health. In her spare time, she trains with a Muay Thai kickboxing team, where she helps fighters safely cut weight in addition to maintaining optimal health between fights.

Aaron Davis, CSCS, USAW LI SPC, USAW LII SPC, CFL1 is a Sports Performance Coach with 10 years experience coaching athletes and teams at the collegiate and professional ranks. Now utilizing the Omegawave technology, Davis firmly believes health and performance go hand in hand. He is a constant student of sports performance, studying under Olympic sprint coaches Dan Pfaff and Stuart McMillan, as well as endurance specialist Damon Martin. Davis coaches athletes in the Austin, Texas area as well as international and US athletes remotely.

Ben House, PhD, CFMP, CN, FDN, fNMT, NCSF, USAW LI SPC has worked as a Strength and Conditioning Coach and Nutritionist since 2006. House was accepted to medical school without an undergraduate degree, but elected to finish his degree and pursue a career in the health and fitness sector. He is currently practicing functional medicine after finishing his PhD and a multi-year metabolic health study within the Nutritional Sciences Department at UT-Austin. House has numerous publications in peer reviewed scientific journals such as The International Journal of Obesity, has presented his work at multiple international conferences, and lectures regularly on health and nutrition at The University of Texas.
